Israel’s Ambassador to Romania Lior Ben Dor said on Wednesday that the fundamental role of education is to fight ignorance and indifference, informs Agerpres.

In his speech delivered on the occasion of the commemoration ceremony at the Holocaust Victims’ Memorial, Lior Ben Dor said that the fundamental role of education is to fight ignorance and indifference. Today, as we honour the victims of the Holocaust, we cannot help but remember that exactly one year ago, on October 7, when the enemies in Gaza committed the most heinous massacre against the Jewish people, as over 1,200 people were murdered in cold blood, hundreds of innocents, civilians were brutally slaughtered, abducted and terrorised in their homes, this violence against children, women, elderly men served as a chilling reminder that the same views of hatred and demonisation that led to the Holocaust still exist in our world today, the ambassador added.

He highlighted the good example Romania offers through the way in which it has learned the lessons of the past.

Today Romania is a good example of what it means to learn from the lessons of the past and recognise them by restoring historical truth, he said. The Romanian Government and Parliament have taken important steps to confront national history, establish the truth and preserve the collective memory, preserve the memory of the Holocaust, the ambassador pointed out, adding that the initiative to build the National Museum of Jewish History and the Holocaust in Romania is of great importance, is a great idea, voicing hope that this museum will be opened in the course of the coming year, 2025. Another major decision is the introduction of the subject the History of the Jews – the Holocaust in the school curriculum, Lior Ben Dor also said.
